WHAT WE DO AND HOW WE DO IT
Our passion at Belize Banana Fibers is creativity and when creativity is combined with sustainability, amazing things happen. Fiber from musaceae (the banana family of plants) provides a material which is light weight, has fire resistance quality, high strength, biodegradable, and robust moisture absorption which inspires us to create a wide variety of decorative, household and personal products. The process begins by collecting, from local plantations, the pseudo-stems after the fruit has been harvested. We then bring them to our workshop where they are processed into fiber. About a half of a pound of fiber is extracted from each pseudo-stem. For coloring we use natural dyes from logwood, yellow ginger, teak, even black beans among other natural elements. Once the fiber is processed and dried it can last up to 100 years
and is one of the strongest of all long fibers.
The second amazing component of Belize Banana Fibers is our community of local artisans. All artisans are able to work from their homes, taking care of their families whilst generating income. The fiber is delivered to their homes where the magic happens. Each item is handmade with care and at the artisans’ own pace. We are able to produce custom designs as well as the standards.
Banana fibers is a new industry for Belize and we are excited to be the first to initiate the long list of possibilities. Our variety of mirrors, pendants, handbags, baskets, trivets, rugs and wall décor are only the beginning. Follow us on social media and subscribe to our WhatApp to stay tuned!
